Why the Disciples Divided in Ontario

An Account of the Division in the Restoration Movement in Ontario

In his first two books, “How the Disciples Came Together in Early Ontario” and “How the Disciples Grew in Ontario (1841-1867)” Ed Broadus filled in much of the history of the beginnings and growth of the church in Ontario. These books were interesting because they gave important insights into the thinking behind this Restoration Movement among believers of differing backgrounds, brought together by the desire to be truly the people of God.
In this new book, “Why the Disciples Divided at the Close of the 19th Century” Ed takes us into the reality that Satan is still at work in our world. While the first two books may be considered “happy” writings, this book reminds us of the need to be ever mindful that from Pentecost on, Satan has done all he can to challenge the faith of believers and destroy the unity of believers. The words of Paul must serve as a warning for the church today, “I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting him who called you in the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel—not that there is another one, but there are some who trouble you and want to distort the gospel of Christ” – Galatians 1:6-7 (ESV).
As we read of the history of division at the end of the 19th century, we need to read remembering that we are always only one generation away from apostasy. May this reminder strengthen us to remain true to the Old Paths and walk in them.
We at the Gospel Herald are pleased to be able to publish this book and commend Ed for his commitment and dedication to complete this important third volume reflecting his careful research. May we be wise enough to learn from the failures of the past.
